KESTREL BEACH

A study in oil of the coastline at Thurlestone, South Devon. Kestrel Beach is the name I call this special place, named after the nesting pair that call in the cliffs above the sand.

Original painting, oil on board

This is one of my favourite local beaches along the coastline where I live. I call it Kestrel beach, because of the nesting pair that call high in the cliffs as sketch and paint there. Just a short distance from my art studio, I enjoy the quietness of this bay which is quite tricky to get to, down a steep cliff climb. The changing light near the sea, weather and tides are a source of endless inspiration to me. I usually sit on the rocks, and make sketches in paint to work on back in the studio. This piece captures the sweep of the bay and the stillness of the late summer sea.
